| Opined October 17, 2003 Usher Nonsense #10 ROUNDING THIRD Well, I never saw Robert Clohessy (Twelve Angry Men) before, and now that I have I'm crazy for him. He's a good, good actor. The end. Not so crazy about the play which is "The Odd Couple as Little League coaches". Good premise, but it's a lot of little scenes that never amount to anything. The small scenes are interesting within themselves but reminded me of sitcom writing. Right away we know the Oscar coach (Clohessy) wants them to win, and the Felix coach (Matthew Arkin) wants them to have a meaningful experience. And it stays right about there for two hours. In those hours Arkin stays locked into an idea of what his character should be, but Clohessy invests colors and takes risks. I'd go see it just to see him. The set is wonderful as well, complete with the back end of Clohessy's paint-business van. It is a problem, though, when Clohessy throws a fit and leaves the ballpark. He should be IN the truck driving away.... And isn't the Houseman a gloomy tomb? Black cinder-block walls. Very inviting. © 2003 by Tulis McCall |
